SPARTA — A New York resident was arrested and charged on Friday, Feb. 14, with drinking alcohol in a Jeep parked in the Stop & Shop parking lot, police said.

Joseph J. Demauro, 59, of Central Islip, N.Y., was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.

At 4:19 p.m., officers were dispatched to the parking lot. When police arrived, a white 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee backed out of its parking spot.

Cpl. Adam Carbery attempted to stop it, but the Jeep continued driving slowly and aimlessly through the supermarket parking lot before finally stopping, police said.

Demauro was arrested after he failed a series of field sobriety tests and was found in possession of a partially consumed bottle of vodka, police said.

He was transported to police headquarters for processing and breath testing, police said. He was released several hours later to a sober adult. His vehicle was impounded.
